Nominations for ISSN Executive Board Members and Second Vice-President

Thursday, April 21st, 2016

Dear Members of ISSN,

This October the Society will elect two new Executive Board members, to serve for three years, as well as its next Second Vice-President, who serves for four years (proceeding to First Vice-President, President, and Past President).

The nominations for these positions are drawn up by the nominating committee, which comprises the current VP and two other Society members. This year, that is Sarah Copland, Mari Hatavara, and Jan Alber.

All ISSN members are invited to propose names for the nominating committee to consider.

Self-nominations are entirely in order, so don’t be shy! Note that eligible candidates will have attended recent ISSN conferences, and will usually commit to attending two meetings of the ISSN Executive Board in each year of their term – one at the ISSN Conference and one at the MLA Convention. At the same time, don’t hesitate to nominate someone, including yourself, who for good reason (lack of funding, distance, etc.) cannot make it to MLA. Candidates for Second VP should have attended 3 out of the last 5 annual conferences.

Please send your suggestions to Sarah, Mari, and Jan (along with a brief indication of the reason for your recommendation) no later than July 15, 2016.

2017 Perkins Prize Nominations

Perkins Prize for Books Published in 2015

Established in 1994, the Perkins Prize honors Barbara Perkins and George Perkins, the founders of both The Journal of Narrative Technique and the Society itself. The prize, awarded to the book making the most significant contribution to the study of narrative in a given year, consists of $1,000 plus a contribution of $500 toward expenses for the winning author to attend the Narrative Conference where the award will be presented.

The Perkins Prize is conceived as a book prize rather than an author prize. Thus all books on the topic of narrative, whether edited collections, collaboratively written books, or monographs, are eligible to compete. If an edited collection or collaboratively written book is selected, the prize goes to the editor(s) or the collaborators. The winner of the competition for books published in 2015 will be announced at the Philadelphia MLA Convention in 2017, and the prize will be presented at the Narrative Conference in Lexington, KY, in March 2017.

To nominate books with a copyright date of 2015, please send an email with “Perkins Prize” in the subject line to the Chair of the judging committee: Jan Alber <janalber@aias.au.dk>. Publisher, third-party, and self-nominations are appropriate. Copies of books must be sent to each of the three judges. Please indicate in the nominating email whether the publisher or the author will send the books. The deadline for nominations and for receipt of books by the judges is June 1, 2016

Books should be sent by authors or their publishers directly to each of the three members of the judging committee:

Project Narrative Summer Institute 2015

Monday, March 16th, 2015

See the following announcement from Jim Phelan about the 2015 PNSI:

Angus Fletcher and I will direct the 2015 Project Narrative Summer Institute at Ohio State from June 8-19.  This year’s theme is “Foundations and Innovations in Narrative Theory.”  Here’s our description:

PNSI “Foundations and Innovations” may conjure up the terminology of “classical” and ‘”postclassical” narratology, but at PNSI 2015 we have something bigger and more dynamic in mind. Rather than orienting the field around distinct periods, we’ll explore it by setting up feedback loops among strong theories, primary narratives in different media, and their implicit challenges to interpretation. We’ll range from from Aristotle’s Poetics to Pixar’s screenwriting philosophy, from Chicago School readings of Macbeth to cognitive analyses of comics, from Genette-inspired readings of Persuasion to feminist approaches to Nike ads, and we’ll save time for participants to workshop their own innovative–and newly foundational–projects.

More details, including info about cost and application procedures, can be found at https://projectnarrative.osu.edu/programs/summer-institute  We should have the tentative reading list up on the site sometime next week.

If you have any questions, please feel free to write to me and/or Angus <fletcher.300@osu.edu>

And please help us spread the word.

Thanks,

Jim

** CALL FOR PAPERS **

Modelling Narrative across Borders

Narratologists are increasingly faced with the situation that the concept of narrative varies widely across borders. This is a happy circumstance for the relevance and vitality of narratological concepts. At the same time, however, this situation means that any easy “lateral compatibility” of concepts such as “narrator,” “(un)reliability,” “focalization,” etc. can no longer be taken for granted. Concepts have a different bearing across different media such as the printed book, film or the digital media. Carrying on with the debates that got underway at the 2013 Paris conference, ENN 4 will address these issues by exploring conceptual models and inputs from various disciplines and methodologies such as rhetoric and stylistics, but also more recent developments including the cognitive sciences, media studies, the digital humanities and many more. In doing so, the ENN aims to act as an on-going forum for discussing narrative theory across borders – conceptual, disciplinary, national, cultural, historical.
